‘All American Girl’ Carrie Underwood and her buttermilk pie

I am an unabashed pie lover. I like pie better than anything. And so it’s sorta sad to me that pie has become banished to the back burner – only surfacing at Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

So it’s with much gladness that I discovered country music sweetheart Carrie Underwood brought the fabulous down-home deliciousness of pie into the national eye. And my oh my – it’s buttermilk pie! Yes, that’s right – Carrie Underwood – the bajillionarie recording artist chose to serve The Yesterday Cafe’s famous buttermilk pie at her wedding reception this last weekend.  Bless your heart Carrie. I heart you and your ‘All – American Girl’ taste

Anyhoo, to celebrate, I decided to post our family’s beloved buttermilk pie recipe. It’s the one I make every Thanksgiving and Christmas … and now for the first time … in July! Yes, that’s right,  I’m planning on enjoying a warm slice of buttermilk pie this evening. Maybe you should too … you’ll love our family recipe and it’s so easy.

To start though, please commit to making a homemade pie crust. It doesn’t take much time and I promise it’s well worth the time. This one makes the perfect pairing with the buttery, sugary buttermilk filling.

Pie Crust

1 1/2 cups flour * 2 tablespoons sugar * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1 tablespoon milk * 1/2 cup oil

Mix together and press in a pie plate. Told you it’s easy! If you like, you can prep shell by baking 10 minutes in 450 degree oven but I never do. I just skip right to pouring in the filling and going from there …

Buttermilk Filling

1/4 cup flour * 1/2 cup butter, melted * 1/2 cup buttermilk * 1 1/2 cups sugar * 1/2 teaspoon vanilla * 3 eggs

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and pour in shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
