Mimi’s Croutons
This is probably the easiest, tastiest thing you can do to a salad … sprinkle generously with crunchy, delectable homemade croutons.
My mom (Mimi) always made croutons homemade when I was a kid.
Two reasons:
#1.Homemade croutons were the only ones available. There were no store bought, boxed croutons when I was a kid. It was a million years ago.
#2. My mom knew that if she put croutons on the salad, we might actually eat the salad. We were picky little eaters …
The point of this story, however, is the fact that my mom made the most delicious croutons in about .04 seconds. It’s just that easy.
Cube sliced bread. Any old bread. Mimi always used white bread because back in the day when I was growing up, that was the only bread at the grocery store. I jest not.
Crowd the cubes on a cookie sheet.
Dribble a little vegetable oil and sprinkle with garlic salt.
Toss, toss, toss.
Bake in 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes.
Watch them so they don’t get too brown.
And WARNING … you’ll want to let them cool before putting in a salad / serving to your family.
As a matter of fact, you might want to sample a few with a glass of wine as you’re making dinner … just to make sure they’ve cooled to a safe temperature.
