Discovering Your Philosophy of Home

I love home. Matter of fact, there’s no place I’d rather be than at home. That’s why I find myself endlessly dreaming about houses and how to make them comfortable, beautiful, and welcoming.

It’s because home is where some of our absolute best life work takes place. It’s where children grow up, where friends and family meet for dinner at the table. It’s where important conversations happen. It’s where the deepest comfort is found. Home is where everyday life becomes sacred, and where love—both God’s and ours—wraps around everyone who walks through the door.

Developing your own philosophy of home is what helps you make design decisions. It’s what determine what colors and textures you’d like in your living space. It’s what helps you know what size table you want in your dining room. It’s how you prioritize what’s on your list of things to buy for your home. It really drives everything about how you go about making your house feel like home.

But if you haven’t thought about your personal philosophy of home, you might gravitate toward letting a designer or influencer set expectations on what your home should look like and how it should function. You start spending money on things that don’t work for you but you’re not sure why. And that’s problematic – and expensive.

In truth, you already have everything you need to make key decisions for your home. But first you need to think about the values and beliefs you have about how your home should function. And that’s why I’m here: To help you discover your unique philosophy of home. So let’s jump in. Here we go!

What’s your unique philosophy about your home?

Maybe you’re thinking, “Gosh, Susie, I don’t really know.” Understandable. Maybe it will help you if I unpack mine. Because it could how you think about your home too. Here it is:

I want my home to be soulful.

For me, home is more than just a physical space—it’s a sanctuary that nurtures joy, comfort, presence, and community. So I want my home to be soulful. Because I believe home is a sacred space where life easily unfolds in meaningful, spirit-filled ways. Maybe you’d like to have a soulful home too?

Philosophy and Characteristics of a Soulful Home

  • Home isn’t just where you live—it’s a sanctuary, a sacred space.
  • The front door is a threshold for welcome, grace, and hospitality.
  • The table is a ministry tool for nourishment, discovery and encouragement.
  • Every room can be a place where God’s peace and presence dwell, where deep rest is available.
  • Outdoor spaces are open for both quiet contemplation alone and whimsical celebration with many.
  • Home should set the stage and take second place to life’s best joy: raising children, learning about creation, enjoying meals with family and friends, having deep and meaningful spiritual conversations, allowing for recuperation and rest, prompting and encouraging God’s love and creativity.

My home brings me such joy. It’s where my people gather, where my little treasures are, where memories are created, where I meet with God and listen. I love home. And I am so grateful for how God has let me dream big about home.

I’d love to encourage you to ask God about how your home can set the stage for your life’s most important work. And it all starts with discovering your home philosophy.
